Biofuels
Thanks to the research work conducted on biofuels by Fiat Powertrain Technologies and Magneti Marelli, we have gained a leading position on the Brazilian market, by proposing a full range of vehicles using Flex, a technology that makes it possible to use variable mixtures of petrol and bioethanol. The system works by means of the Software FlexFuel Sensor (SFS) – produced by Magneti Marelli – which is able to recognise the composition of the fuel contained in the tank and to adapt the working parameters of the engine accordingly. In this manner, the driver may choose whether to use petrol, bioethanol or a mixture of the two, in any proportion. A further expression of the high technological level attained is the Fiat Siena Tetrafuel, manufactured and marketed in Brazil, which, in addition to being equipped with the flex-fuel system, can be fuelled with natural gas. The Tetrafuel® is the first engine ever to be able to run on four different fuels: bioethanol, petrol + alcohol, pure petrol and natural gas. Today, all the Fiat engines in the European market are already predisposed for the use of a mixture with 5% biofuel.
